  • Establishment for the Main Contractor Wika, a Project Wide (Systems & Infra) Earthing & Bonding and Lightning Protection Strategy document, with due consideration of stray current risks;

  • EMC, E&B, and Lightning & Surge Protection associated with the complete Communications Work Package and SCADA, including technical support in respect of interfaces and integration with other work package contractors;

  • Providing on-the-job training/mentoring/tutelage to the Client EMC (incl. Lightning) - E&B Team, including providing informal training to the sub-contractors of the Client in respect of EMC, E&B, and LV Power Distribution;

  • Subsequently requested by PT Len to:

    • Lead the 3rd Rail Team to close-out outstanding technical matters during the Design Phase;

    • Lead the Blue Light System Team in the Design, Procurement, Construction, Installation, Testing & Commissioning Phases.

Engaged by George Kent Lion Pacific JV (GKLPJV) to provide long-term Consultancy Services.

Responsible for the horizontal and vertical integration of Earthing & Bonding, EMC, Lightning & Surge Protection across the complete railway spectrum of Signalling, Communications, Traction Power Stations, Over-Head Equipment, including integration with Infrastructure Works.

Scope of Consultancy:

  • EMC Management Plan;

  • Lightning & Surge Protection and EMC Installation Guidelines;

  • Integrated E&B Plan comprising requirements of Signalling, Traction Power, Stray Current Management, Trackwork, and integration with that of Lightning Protection and Infrastructure Earthing;

  • Designed the Integrated Earthing & Bonding Plan for the KKSB Depot, including assessment of the associated risks, including that of stray currents;

  • Review and advise on technical matters related to Stray Current Management;

  • EMC Coordination Services within SYSTEMS and at the Interfaces with Other Parties (including LRV);

  • Interface with the Employers Representative and Detailed Design Consultant;

  • Review of EMC related submissions and processes;

  • Review of EMC Control Plans of sub-contractors;

Assignment Project Employer: ARUP Singapore

Engaged by ARUP Singapore to provide the following Consultancy in respect of Lightning & Surge Protection and EMC Installation Guidelines for the project.

Subsequently engaged by ARUP Singapore to carry out an Earthing System Analysis in respect of MV & LV Faults at traction power substations and passenger stations, impact assessment at interfaces with other structures (existing stations/TPSS, third parties, stations of other railways), as well as the approach to bonding of HV and LV cable sheaths. The analysis also included that of transient equipotential bonding. CDEGS was used for the analysis. 

Activities also included interface discussions/reviews and presentations with the Employer's Representatives and Detailed Design Consultants.

  • EN 50121-2 Emission tests - Background RF Emission, 'SNIFF' tests in existing equipment rooms, complete with Test Plans, Testing, and Test Report (characterisation of environment);

  • EN 50121-2 RF Emission Measurements - Railway as a Whole, complete with Test Plans, Testing, and Test Report;

  • General technical support in respect of Lightning & Surge Protection, and Earthing & Bonding.

Engaged by GLTM to review the tendered requirements, existing set-up of Phase-I and Phase-II, and redesign of the rehabilitation measures for the complete (existing) Ampang Line LRT in respect of Lightning Protection, Surge Protection, Earthing & Bonding including the Ampang Control Centre and Administrative Building, Stations, Traction Power Sub-Stations, Depots, Warehouse and Maintenance Halls, including equipment along the Guideway/Wayside.

 

Name of Project: Ipoh Padang-Besar 25kV AC Double Tracking Project

Assignment Project Employer: Balfour-Beatty Ansaldo-Systems STS JV

Engaged by Balfour-Beatty Ansaldo-Systems STS JV (BBASJV) to provide long-term Consultancy Services.

Responsible for the horizontal and vertical integration of Earthing & Bonding, EMC, Lightning & Surge Protection across the complete railway spectrum of Signalling, Communications, Traction Power Stations, Over-Head Equipment, including integration with Infrastructure Works.

This project has some significant differences when compared to previous KTMB Electrified Double Tracking projects. The NDT project has Berapit Tunnel which is of very high soil resistivity posing unique E&B issues, and the Prai Swing Bridge which is the first of its kind in Malaysia.

Scope of Consultancy:

  • Carrying out of numerous System Integration discussions with all team leaders within BBASJV, the proprietary sub-contractors, and the INFRA Contractor (MGJV);

  • Leading and supporting the BBASJV team in the determination of requirements with the Governments Consultants (KSET), to establish baselines to facilitate studies to be undertaken by BBASJV proprietary international sub-contractors, and external specialist consultants;

  • Established several documents, sourced from documents sourced within BBASJV, documents from other external consultants, and documents from Acuity. They are the SYSTEMS Lightning & Surge Protection Measures document (which included EMC installation techniques), the Common Earthing & Bonding Philosophy document, and a Cable Management document (to mitigate risks due to traction currents);

  • Significant contribution to elaborate the EMC requirements and its documentation, including technical discussions with KSET;

  • Close liaison with the BBASJV proprietary sub-contractors and KSET, to identify and define the E&B requirements, and to establish the E&B Study Report;

  • Significant technical support on matters relating to E&B, EMC, Lighting & Surge Protection Measures, and Grounding, to the BBASJV team and the proprietary sub-contractors;

  • Established a Verification Matrix to identify key design requirements from all the documents mentioned above;

  • Carried-out several rounds of verification exercises with all proprietary sub-contractors to ensure that the E&B and EMC requirements have been incorporated in their designs and drawings;

  • Carried-out several rounds of reviews at the fabrication stage, to ensure that the intents of the design drawings had been followed through;

  • Established an E&B & EMC Issues Register to track design issues pertaining to E&B and EMC that had been omitted or that needed refinement;

  • Testing of Large Earth Grid Resistance of TPSS - Test Plan, Testing, Test Report;

  • EMC Coordination and Close-Out;

  • Technical Support including trouble shooting.

Scope of Consultancy:

The Railway Industry has proven to be particularly challenging in that its sub-systems such as Signalling and Interlocking systems, Signal Post Telephone systems, SCADA systems, Passenger Information Systems, CCTV & Security systems, Automatic Fare Collection systems, and Communications Systems are significantly exposed, over large geographical area to lightning, transients and related EMI issues. This results in significant lightning damage to equipment, power supply trips, and ‘signalling disturbances’ resulting in train delays, etc.

Engaged by GLTM Sdn Bhd to provide technical support to the numerous international SYSTEMS contractors of the project.  The services rendered included Outline Design, Earth Resistance & Surge Impedance Testing of Stations / Sub-Stations, as well as trouble shooting and recommendation of mitigation measures in respect of Lightning Protection, Surge Protection, Grounding & Bonding, and EMC Installation Measures.
